Melba Guesthouse**** is situated in the Danube Gulf and it is limited by the Cazanele Mari (Wide Depressions) and Cazanele Mici (Narrow Depressions). We are talking about the Danube Gorge, which traverses 125 km, of which 45 km represent the famous portion Depressions – Gates of the Danube Gorge between Dubova and Ogradena, consisting of Cazanele Mari (Wide Depressions) (4 km long) and Cazanele Mici (Narrow Depressions) (5 km long), where the Danube forges through the mountains, and the width narrows between 180-250 m. The area is a protected natural monument by the international laws of European Union (here can be found the wild tulip in Latin “Apus Melba”, the Rock Martin in Latin “Ptyonoprogne fuligula” – a small bird in swallow family, etc.).In the Depression area, at the entry in the Gulf of Mraconia River, on a mountain peak, an impressive image of Decebal is digged into stone, and nearby on the Danube shore, the Mraconia Hermitage (The Underwater Monastery) is undergoing reconstruction. Here is the Tabula Traiana inscription carved into stone that records the commencement of the suspended road of Trajan in Dacia (40 km).

4. Cimitirul eroilor / Heroes Cemetery

The arrival in Dubova is estimated at about 8:00 pm. We will have dinner at 8:30 pm in Melba Restaurant.

DAY 2!

We will have breakfast at 8:30 am. We will leave for Dubova-Drencova route at 10:00 am. The length of the route is approximately 47 km. On the way to Drencova we will stop in Svinita and we will visit the ruins of Tricule city.

On the left shore of the Danube River, about 4 km before Sviniţa town there are three towers placed into three corners of a hypothetical triangle, which before the rising of the Danube water level (due to the dam construction in 1971) were placed on the steep shore. Today, they are bathing into river’s waters, and the south tower is completely immersed in water. The towers that are seen today have 10 m and 11 m height. One has undergone serious damage because of the treasure hunters which caused the fall of the segment from the river side. All have been built in rock, and the walls have 1.40 m thickness and three levels within the towers.

The dating of the towers is based mostly on suppositions and only on a few documents. One document issued in 1419 by Sigismund of Luxembourg informs us that Şviniţa Stronghold was given to the Teutonic Knights by the Hungarian king so that they would ensure the Danube border defense. In another document from 1443 the Stronghold is mentioned among protected by the lords of Banat. The historians, given some generous error margins, agree on a period between the second half of the XIIth century and the beginning of the XVth century, but some time before 1430.

The estimated arrival time in Drencova is 3:00 pm. In Drencova we will visit Drencova Stronghold.

The Stronghold was located in the past on the Danube shore. It was probably built around 1419. Between 1429 and 1935 the Stronghold was owned the German Knights Order, and starting with 1457 it became the property of Iancu of Hunedoara family. Being a border stronghold it has been attacked many times and it has even been ruined by the Otomans. The date of the ruining attack is though unknown. The old documents make references of the old dimensions of the stronghold: 20-25 m length, 15 m height, and the thickness of the walls reached some 1.50 m. After the construction of the hydroelectric power plant Iron Gates, the ruins have been surrounded by the Danube waters and are bathed ever since thus condemned to perish. Currently, about 25-30 m away from the shore within the Danube waters can be seen what is left of the Stronghold. The wall segment is about 15 m long, rectangular and it has some holes in it. The remaining of the walls lives restfully in the depth of the waters.

After returning from the visit, estimated around 8:00 pm, we will dine at 8:30 pm in Melba Restaurant.
